SHIM SEUNGYEON DESIGN is a design studio that explores materials and making through hands-on practice, working between independent making and industrial production to develop the unique potential of each project.

SHIM SEUNGYEON DESIGN은 직접 손으로 재료와 제작 방식을 탐구하는 과정을 바탕으로 디자인에 접근하며, 스튜디오의 제작과 산업적 생산이 교차하는 지점에서 각 프로젝트의 고유한 가능성을 발견하고 발전시키는 디자인 스튜디오입니다.

PROFILE

Founded by Seungyeon Shim in Seoul, Korea, in 2019, SHIM SEUNGYEON DESIGN is a design studio working across furniture, products, and spatial environments.

The studio works across commissioned projects and self-initiated work. Its independent research is developed through editions and exhibitions, while external projects allow these interests to be flexibly developed according to their respective contexts and production environments. This extends beyond products and furniture to the creation of spatial environments, allowing each project to develop a design language specific to its context.

The studio is particularly interested in the intersection between hands-on making and experimentation and industrial production. This approach reflects the studio’s belief that human sensibility should also have a place within industrial production.

For example, research into metal pressing has developed into PRESSURA STOOL and other works for the studio’s independent label, SHIM, while the same research has taken the form of PINCH HOLDER, a small bathroom object developed in collaboration with a stainless steel manufacturer.

심승연이 2019년 서울에서 시작한 SHIM SEUNGYEON DESIGN은 가구, 제품, 공간을 아우르며 활동해 왔습니다.

스튜디오는 클라이언트와 함께하는 프로젝트와 자체적으로 진행하는 작업을 병행합니다. 자체적인 연구는 에디션과 전시 등을 통해 확장하고, 외부 프로젝트에서는 이를 각각의 맥락과 제작 환경에 따라 유연하게 구체화합니다. 이는 제품이나 가구를 넘어 공간을 구성하는 일까지 이어지며, 각 프로젝트가 고유한 맥락에 맞는 디자인 언어를 갖출 수 있도록 합니다.

스튜디오는 특히 손으로 직접 만들고 실험하는 과정에서 산업적 생산이 만나는 지점에 관심을 둡니다. 이 접근은 산업적 생산에도 인간의 감각이 담기기를 바라는 스튜디오의 태도이기도 합니다.

예를 들어 금속의 프레스 가공에 대한 연구는 스튜디오의 디자인 레이블 SHIM의 PRESSURA STOOL 등으로 발전하기도 하고, 스테인리스 스틸 제품 제조사와의 협업을 통해 욕실의 작은 제품인 PINCH HOLDER로 구현되기도 하였습니다.

'Practical release of internal design research'

The label develops and produces furniture and objects from the studio’s ongoing exploration of materials and making processes. Ideas developed through experimentation are tested through actual production and use, feeding new experience back into the studio’s practice.

'SHIM' 은 스튜디오가 지속적으로 탐구해온 재료와 제작 방식을 바탕으로 가구와 오브제를 개발하고 생산하는 독립 디자인 레이블입니다. 실험을 통해 발전시킨 아이디어를 실제 생산과 사용의 과정에서 검증하며, 그 과정에서 얻은 새로운 경험을 다시 스튜디오의 작업으로 축적합니다.
